Media Management studies

Are you enthusiastic about the media and advertising industry? Then the Digital Media Management study programme at Cologne Business School is an excellent springboard. After all, the same holds true for the media that applies to almost all other industries: everything is becoming more digital – and more international. Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Netflix are gaining more users worldwide; marketing is shifting towards social media, content and online. One thing is the same for all companies: They not only need creative people, but also savvy managers who have a mastery of the digital media business.

Get to know all facets of the digital media industry

The Digital Media Management study programme at Cologne Business School combines creativity, sound management knowledge and expertise for the digital economy. Lectures are held in English, the language of the online world. You will also have the opportunity to learn another foreign language. Studying Media Management at Cologne Business School will prepare you for job entry in all areas of the digital media industry, because you learn how media is managed and how digital marketing, social media marketing and company communication work. Media research is also part of the curriculum; thanks to big data, the analysis and optimization possibilities are colossal.

The advantage: management knowledge

At the centre of Media Management studies at CBS is a degree in business administration at a renowned business school. The first three semesters are comprised primarily of economic fundamentals such as (media) law, mathematics, business figures, personnel management, strategic and international management and social research.

Learn theories and apply them in practice

Anyone who wants to understand the world of digital media needs to know how these work. In the fourth semester, you apply your knowledge to a business project. You will work on a task from the media world, develop a solution and present your findings. In the 6th semester, a business simulation game poses you with challenging scenarios to work through. These are based on current media trends. A module game and app concept are also part of your studies, and you can collaborate on applied media research projects, work for CBS TV or join other student initiatives. In order to gain insight into the media landscape, guest speakers are often called in to talk about the latest media trends and media jobs. We also go on trips to events and media-industry trade fairs right here in Cologne, such as dmexco, one of the world’s most important events in digital business. All this speaks for the location of our school in Cologne.

More practical experience or abroad? You decide

In the 5th semester, you have the choice: spend a semester abroad at one of our partner universities around the world plus a short internship – or a long internship plus a media project. In the case of a media project, you have the possibility to implement your own idea. This can be the development of a concept, a student film or a research project.

Where should your career begin?

The digital economy is vast. For example, you could begin your career on the content side, such as a YouTube channel operator, at a film production studio, a digital agency, an online media company, or a game publisher. It is also possible to join a media agency, a marketer or an AdTech start-up. In addition, many digital and traditional companies rely on experts to ensure that the advertising budget is used in a targeted manner – for example, media buyers or digital marketing strategists.
