Financial questions about studying – Answers to the most important questions
What costs are involved in studying?
There are various costs associated with studying. First and foremost, students must cover their general living expenses, including rent, food, and clothing. Additionally, enrolment fees and semester contributions must be paid upon registration. As a private university, CBS also charges tuition fees, which vary depending on the programme.
Why does CBS charge tuition fees?
Wondering why CBS has tuition fees while many universities in Germany are tuition-free? As a private, state-recognised university, CBS operates independently of government funding. While privately funded universities are common in countries like the USA and the UK, this model is also gaining importance in Germany. This diversity in the educational landscape allows you to choose the study programme that best suits your needs.

Am I eligible for child benefit while studying?
Between the ages of 18 and 25, you may receive child benefit as long as you have not yet completed vocational training or a degree. Your income level does not affect eligibility. If you have already completed a course of study or training, you may still qualify under certain conditions, such as engaging in part-time employment.
Can I receive housing benefit while studying?
To be eligible for housing benefit, specific criteria must be met. This government subsidy helps cover rent and heating costs. However, students receiving BAföG (state funding) are generally not eligible. For further details, contact your local housing benefit office or municipal authorities.
Can I apply for an accommodation allowance while studying?
The accommodation allowance helps students cover their uncovered costs for rent and heating. This applies if actual housing costs exceed the standard allowance included in student funding or parental maintenance contributions. Even students living with their parents may be eligible for this allowance. More information is available from your local employment agency.
