The aim of this course is to solidify the students’ existing language competencies, as independent users of English, and to enable them to apply this to their studies, focusing on educational and business domains. Since English is the medium of instruction in their respective study programmes, students are expected to reach a proficient user level in English within the first year.

The overall objective of this course is to provide students with possibility of applying their business knowledge on concrete business situation, related to the field of their specialization.

By the end of the module students should be able to:

BUSINESS SIMULATION GAME
3 ECTS

In a business simulation game participants have to manage their own virtual company which operates in the same market as other participant-operated competitors. This involves making typical management decisions in realistic environments. Beside the deepening and active examination of subject-specific knowledge the simulation games also include the team environment, where interaction, communication and prioritization are of paramount importance. Participants learn how to manage risk and uncertainty while time is limited and information constrained. Group-reflections help to take over different perspectives and to discuss pros and cons of content- as well as behavior-related actions.

MASTER THESIS TUTORIAL
2 ECTS

During the Master Thesis Tutorial you will learn the fundamentals for your Master thesis: Defining the topic as well as structuring the thesis and you will learn the theoretical knowledge for scientific working.

SKILLS ELECTIVE
2 ECTS

In the Soft Skills Courses you will improve your social, leadership and project management skills. Additionally to the courses in the first and second semester you can choose another one in the third semester. Decide for yourself which of your personal competences you want to push forward.

MASTER THESIS
24 ECTS

During your 4th semester you are working on your Master thesis. You have 19 weeks to complete your thesis and the subject is freely selectable. A supervisor from CBS will support you and you can write the thesis in collaboration with a company as well. Or you can write your thesis in connection with a stay abroad.

A national or international internship – with a minimum duration of 8 weeks – is a mandatory part of the study programme. It is scheduled for the semester break from June till August. Our Career Services department will help you find a suitable company.

Master in Consulting as a specialisation within the International Business Studies programme

Company success is not based solely on genius, luck or skill. Successful global conglomerates and globally active SMEs develop strategies and apply them. Yet every organisation, however big, reaches its limits at some point. Those who want to grow on an international scale or become more profitable use the services of external or internal corporate consultancies. The unobstructed view from the outside and expertise from a wide range of different projects shows the way to new opportunities and competitive advantages. You have decided to pursue a career in international strategic management or consulting? A Master’s degree from CBS International Business School is an excellent way to get started, because in this English-language study programme, we will familiarize you with the typical tools consultants use for analysing, problem solving and decision making. Almost every week consultants are faced with completely new challenges and are expected to come up with convincing solutions for the top management. This is where the entire spectrum of business administration theory and the ability to apply it from the hip are required. Your MBA degree from CBS prepares you with lectures and courses like Business Economics, Innovation and Change Management, Accounting and Sustainable Supply Chain Management.  

Learn how consultants work

Corporate and strategic consultants work quickly and efficiently because they have recourse to tried and tested tools – these are already part of the course of studies in the first semester, for example in the course, International Competitive Strategy.  

Company reorientation

Changes in companies create consulting needs. In the event of a restructuring, corporate takeover or merger, strategies are analysed, evaluated, revised and supplemented – right up to strategic reboot. This is the topic of the second semester of your Master’s in Consulting. In the third semester, you will learn about the correlation between company organisation and strategic orientation as well as how organisations can be further developed.

Practical knowledge for the profession

Consulting and strategic consulting is a fast business. That is why we attach great importance to practical experience: a) with lecturers from the business world, b) with a mandatory internship of at least eight-weeks either at home or abroad and c) with a business project, where you work on a case and present your results – or in a business simulation game, where you will experience the impact of your strategic decisions as you compete against fellow students. Soft skills courses will teach you how to organize intercultural teams, manage projects, and present yourself convincingly. The fourth semester is lecture-free, so that you can devote yourself completely to your Master’s thesis. As for the amount of practical relevance to your Master’s thesis, this is completely up to you. Many CBS students write theirs as part of a corporate project, while others look abroad for inspiration as they spend the semester at one of our many partner universities.

Eligibility for the Master’s in Consulting

The prerequisite is a first academic degree in economics. Advanced English skills are also expected.
