Financial Markets & Rising Economies

“Financial Markets & Rising Economies” play a special role in the context of sustainable management and digitalization. These fast-growing, emerging economies are facing key challenges in terms of climate protection, energy consumption or respect for human rights, while shaping their growth and role in a globalized economy. Digitalization as well as sustainability strategies require financial resources that are made available through financial markets by trading financial assets such as shares, bonds or derivatives. The globalization of trade and capital flows plays a crucial role in the market-based allocation of limited resources, which opens up growth opportunities but also poses systemic challenges.

The article ‘The dynamics of financial information and non-financial environmental, social and governance information in the strategic decision-making process’ of our colleague Prof. Dr. Mike Schulze has been selected as an Outstanding Paper in the 2020 Emerald Literati Awards. It was published last year in the Journal of Strategy and Management (Vol. 12, No. 3, pp. 314-329) and co-authored by Prof. Dr. Andreas Wald and Dr. Martin Esch.

In the past year, the members of the financial markets & rising economies research cluster have worked on a large number of scientific projects, lectures, and publications. The topics cover a broad spectrum: from digital transformation of the finance function in companies to modern business models to public structures and institutions in transition.
At a conference jointly organized by USAID, the World Bank, and GIZ, the Libya Local Governance Forum, Prof. Dr. Jan Werner presented his research on the improved provision of public goods – from transport to public services.
This was presented in the context of reconstruction after a civil war, from electricity supply to education. Furthermore, Prof. Werner has presented his work on fiscal equalization in Germany, Cameroon, and Pakistan at international conferences in Madrid, Cologne, and Islamabad. He presented his work on implicit pricing for public parking spaces in São Paulo at the 8th Conference on Mobility in a Globalised World. Parts of this and other research have been published in books such as Mobility in a Globalised World and in professional journals.

Prof. Dr. Ulrich Anders worked on the further development of classical analysis frameworks, especially in the context of mergers and acquisitions. Prof. Anders has also created a Business Model Benchmark Map to holistically map all aspects of modern business models in the digital environment.

“Evaluating competitiveness of a catching up economy”. This collaboration with Prof. Dr. Malgorzata Zmuda and Prof. Dr. Wojciech Bieńkowski analyses the strengthening of the competitive position of various EU countries in the context of a model that attributes socio-economic progress to international division of labour and institutional as well as technological factors. Prof. Remer also presented her work with Hanna Kattilakoski on the financial and operational autonomy of microfinance institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa at the 8th International Conference on Sustainability and Responsibility, which took place in Cologne in 2018.

Since November 2017, Prof. Dr. Mike Schulze and Prof. Dr. Uwe-Wilhelm Bloos have alternated in content as
Editors-in-chief for the new trade journal REthinking Finance from Handelsblatt Fachmedien.

The journal takes up the technological and organizational change of the finance function in companies and supports specialists and managers in finance departments in actively shaping the digital transformation. In addition to four standard issues per year with changing content, the magazine addresses specific topics in two supplementary special issues. For 2019, these are the topics “Business Analytics” and “Blockchain in Finance”, the content of which will be developed with renowned academic guest editors.

Prof. Dr. Brigitta Herrmann moderated the panel: “Sustainable Development in Central Africa – Responsible Leadership and Finance” at the 8th International Conference on Sustainability & Responsibility in Cologne (here with Princess Esperance Fezeu and two Cameroonian kings). The panel included a Cameroonian king, the Director General of the organisation Esperanza-Cade, Princess Esperance Fezeu, the Federal Chancellor’s Commissioner for Africa and other personalities.
