„Building New Bridges between Business and Ethics”

The 2nd International Conference on CSR, Sustainability, Ethics and Governance came to a close after an informative and highly international two-day event. This year’s conference was hosted by and took place at the Nanjing University of Finance and Economics (NUFE) in Nanjing, P.R. China. Cologne Business School (CBS) in Cologne, Germany and Loyola University in New Orleans, USA, organized the annual event in collaboration with Springer Publishing Company. Academics and practitioners gathered together from all continets to present their research and discuss about this year’s theme: “Building New Bridges between Business and Ethics”. Each year the conference is designed to offer current examples on key international CSR and sustainability topics from academia and practice.

The official opening was chaired by organizer Prof. Dr. Hualiang Lu and featured captivating welcome speeches by Prof. Dr. Ju Xingrong – Vice President of Nanjing University of Finance and Economics and Prof. Dr. René Schmidpeter – Conference Co-Chair/ Dr. Jügen Meyer Endowed Chair for International Business Ethics and CSR at Cologne Business School. This was followed by keynote speeches from academics on current international issues such as “Entrepreneurship’s Relationship to CSR” by Prof. Stephen Hicks, “Promoting CSR for Chinese Enterprises in Africa” by Liu Hansong, as well as “Opportunities and Challenges for Sino-German CSR Corporation” by Wang Xinyu. The Lifetime Contribution Award was proudly presented to Haifeng Huang for continued academic excellence in the field of sustainability. Throughout the event state-of-the-art presentations were held by delegates who featured international examples spanning various disciplines including: tourism, marketing, human rights, conflict minerals, carbon reporting, responsible investment, entrepreneurial wisdom, advancements in agriculture and many more. Top papers will be selected for publication by Springer Publishing as well as featured in the International Journal of Corporate Social Responsibility (a new Springer open access journal), which will be launched in the beginning of 2016.

In addition to forums, on day-two attendees were invited to listen to and converse with experts offering current insights of the state of CSR and sustainability in their perspective fields. This included presentations from guest speakers: Thomas Walker, President of the Walk-on Institute for Sustainable Solutions, who spoke on “The CSR Strategy of Europe and the Impacts on the Global Economy” as well as Yin Gouxin, President of Chenfeng Group, located in Jintan, P.R. China on the company’s CSR and sustainability strategy. Yin Gouxin was afterwards honoured with the Business Lifetime Contribution Award for his pioneering role in social responsibility in the Chinese apparel industry and continuously setting new sectorial sustainability standards in the country.

Organizers were proud to release the latest book in the Springer Corporate Social Responsibility Management Series: Sustainable Development and CSR in China. Edited by René Schmidpeter, Hualiang Lu, Christpher Stehr and Haifeng Huang. Another highlight was the official opening of the first-ever Sino-German Research Institute for Sustainable Development, a result of a long-thriving partnership between host Prof. Dr. Hualiang Lu of NUFE and Co-Chair Prof. Dr. René Schmidpeter of CBS. The institute’s first grant was awarded to Ms. Bonnie Lewtas, a CBS Master’s student in the field of Sustainable Tourism Management who was invited to present her research on sustainable hotel management on small island destinations. While the conference may have come to an end for this year, the CSR and sustainability discussion remains a hot-topic in public discourse.
