General Management studies aimed at a Master’s degree in Management Consulting

Companies are constantly confronted with new developments that require entrepreneurial decisions. Business consultants provide decision-making tools; they quickly develop concepts for complex economic questions. If you are looking for a career in consulting, a Master’s in Management Consulting, such as that offered by Cologne Business School, is an excellent way to get started. You will get to know the various phases of the consulting process as well as the essential tools used in business consulting. This also includes the acquisition of new clients. By observing best practice examples, you will get to know innovative project management approaches.

Embedded in a General Management Master’s degree

Management Consulting is one of three elective specializations in the General Management programme, which is taught in German – a Master’s degree programme focusing on management activities in international corporations. In the general part of your studies, you take courses like macroeconomics, strategic management, law, CSR and sourcing. This comprehensive knowledge is an important basis for the wide range of possible consulting projects that go with the job.

Market overview and methods

In the first semester, you will get an overview of the current consultancy market and the firms providing these services, learn about general consultancy phases and methods, and find out which current concepts change the consulting landscape.

Methods of work and project management

In the second semester, the focus is on the working methods in consultancies; as consulting is always project based, outstanding skills in project management are a must. Time and labour are often the limiting factors, so you will learn management and controlling techniques to efficiently handle these scarce resources – for example, by delegating tasks dynamically.

Finance and outlooks

The third semester focuses specifically on one key issue: financial consulting. In-depth consultancy results are rooted in the correct analysis and interpretation of the financial figures in order to develop a plan and scenarios. Especially in international projects, the complexity of a globalized financial world is a major challenge – for which your studies prepare you.

The core business of the consulting industry is constantly changing. No two projects are the same, and the need for consulting among companies and organizations is constantly shifting. Serving to ideally prepare you for a successful career is a course which will enlighten you on new approaches and current trends in consulting.

Science and practice

In the fourth semester, you write your Master’s thesis, where you demonstrate your ability to work scientifically. Many students take advantage of the opportunity to write their thesis as part of a project at a business consultancy. As an alternative, you might also consider a semester abroad, where you can also work on your thesis. And in the course lectures, you will become familiar with real-life cases.

Strengthen personal skills

Consulting is only successful for agencies and customers when consulting personalities are convincing and deliver outstanding work. Soft skills and foreign language courses – these cut across all study contents, regardless of the chosen specialization in Consulting – prepare yourself for your future career.

Your career prospects

The consultancy sector is a popular career setting for university graduates, top consultancies often operating under the premise, “grow or go”. For some, measuring up in a highly competitive work environment is exciting, while others prefer a more task-oriented environment in a medium-sized boutique consultancy or the in-house consulting department of a large company. An academic career including PhD is also possible.
