A group of motivated footballers from the CBS soccer-group, just short of a dozen, decided to attend the annual Private Schools football tournament in Berlin this year. These 10 guys went out to represent the CBS, at “Cup der Privaten”. Arriving there not really knowing what to expect, they came in with a winning mentality and nothing to lose. However, unlike the others that showed up with packs of fans and many with more than one team to represent their university, the CBS boys were the clear underdogs in this tournament.

With around 70 teams participating, most representing Universities from all over Germany and a handful of other countries like; Belgium, France, Holland and even Turkey, it was bound to be a sensational tournament. The group phase was announced on Thursday night at the opening ceremony. Next up was a good night’s rest before the long weekend ahead.

On Friday morning it all began. Pinned in one of the strongest groups, it was a tough day. With 6 games through, 4 won, 1 tied and 1 lost, qualification was at hand for the lads from Cologne.
It was definitely impressive that they reached the knock out stage with such a small group, minimal team training and no fans to back them up.

Saturday came up and the knock out stage was on. The rounds of 16 were a gift, coming through with an easy 3-0 win. Next up were the quarter finals, this was a tough match; with time running out a joker substitution was the decider, another victory and with it the door to the semis was open.

No one could believe that this small group would go so far. The guys themselves were in awe. The semifinals were up and CBS faced a strong opponent from Hamburg. An extremely tense match, going 1-1 to the last minute, a small defensive mistake opened up the space for a last gasp 2-1 for the boys from Hamburg. A bitter end to an amazing run..

To not leave empty handed, exhausted and disappointed, the CBS soccer team mustered up one last time and played for third place. It was another tight match that eventually ended in a dramatic penalty shoot-out. Once again the CBS goal keeper showed his worth, saving 3 spot-kicks to bring home the bronze medal.

A truly thrilling and emotional weekend came to an end. No one thought they’d go so far, yet they fought through every match as if it were a final, showed true team spirit and sportsmanship.

The underdog came through, and left his mark. Next year we will be back! Bigger, better, stronger and with a fan base to roar the team to victory!
