CBS Study Buddy Programme: When Contacts Turn into Friendships

All Categories, Inside CBS   -  22. July 2019

CBS students can apply for our Study Buddy programme again which makes it easier for international guest students to settle in and find their way around the CBS campus. The Study Buddies benefit from the volunteer work by improving their foreign language skills and preparing themselves for their semester abroad through a change of perspective.

A win-win situation for both partners

Eva Quel, master student of the Intercultural Management programme, has been a Study Buddy for a year and would not want to miss this experience: “We deal intensively with other countries, their cultures and languages, and the development of intercultural competences during our studies – but mainly in theory. The Study Buddy programme offered me the unique opportunity to apply and develop my intercultural and Spanish language skills while making new friends. I also learned how to prepare Peruvian ceviche from my Study Buddy Franco.”

“Life in Germany is totally different from life in my native Peru. In the beginning it was hard for me to get used to the language, the people, the food, the lifestyle and the culture. Eva supported me a lot during this time. It was a good feeling to always have a permanent contact person at my side. Knowing that she, as a local, could give me a better and unique view of her country, was important for my successful experience in “Deutschland”. She also helped me with my German – that has now become really good,” says Franco Rafael Zegarra Garcia Godos. The fact that study buddy partnerships become real friendships is more a rule than an exception: Many Study Buddies keep in touch after their semester abroad or take the opportunity to visit the country of the guest student.

Certificate as an application plus

To apply for the programme, students simply send an e-mail to Katharina Ging, International Students Coordinator, at [email protected] If there are already wishes regarding the nationality and language of the buddy, these will be taken into account when searching for a suitable partner. Students can also have this commitment certified in order to shine with their experience in intercultural competence in applications.
