Bachelor Graduation 2018

News   -  12. September 2018

Solemn farewell to the Bachelor graduates of the EMS

The Gold Hall at the Hilton Hotel Mainz is fully occupied, with around 270 guests eagerly awaiting the awarding of diplomas to this year’s Bachelor graduates from the European Management School (EMS). Finally the time has come. The graduates are called, diplomas handed over and hands shaken. Three years of work for this one moment.

What all transpired between the first group picture at the semester opening celebration in 2015 until the graduation ceremony in 2018? In front of a crowded audience, the two speakers from the graduating class, Theresa Bleul and Akif Divrak, held an impressive speech about the past years. Hurdles were mastered, but above all, found friendships and exciting experiences were highlighted. All of this was possible thanks to the parents, professors and staff, who were as happy about this special evening as the graduates themselves.

In addition to enjoying a delicious 3-course meal and the handing out of the diplomas, the guests eagerly awaited the traditional throwing of the caps by the graduating class. How challenging were the last few days of study and thesis writing before the goal – graduation – was reached? The student speakers reported: “The view of empty pages in the beginning was definitely a stomach ache. So many rules, formatting requirements and what was the methodology everyone seemed to be talking about.” Many of the graduates present could relate to this phase of the thesis writing process. The feeling of success is even greater now that this “hurdle”, as well as, the integrated semester abroad in an English or foreign language study programmehave been mastered. These experiences have given students “a great deal of character” and “unforgettable moments”.

Four top graduates were honored by Prof. Dr. Bloos, Head of the EMS, as well as the Academic Director, Prof. Dr. Westenbaum, who achieved a particularly outstanding final grade. Even the parents of the graduates had a great deal to celebrate. Correcting three years’ worth of reports, calming their students before exams or sending care packages overseas – they were always there.  The parents deserved just as must recognition as their children at the graduation ceremony. This was also acknowledged by the university staff during the graduation speeches. Professor Westenbaum gave the graduates valuable advice for their future derived from own experience and talked about the exciting first few years in a new profession.

Even though the graduation ceremony always marks a farewell, it is also a new start. The 2018 graduates still have a lot to do, and who knows where they will be in three years? What is certain is that many of them will remain loyal to the EMS. Some will enter the Master’s programmedirectly, while others, as part of the alumni network, will pass on their career tips and insider knowledge to future students.

The EMS team once again congratulated all the undergraduate graduates and wished them all the best for their future.
